February 27, 2022 is the fourth day of our small group tour in Dali Prefecture. In the morning, we visited the Erhai Haitang Wetland Park. After lunch, we went to Weishan Ancient City and stayed at the Huazhu Theme Hotel near the ancient city.
Weishan Ancient City is the seventh attraction of our trip. After a 2-hour lunch break, we had tea in the hotel wine garden, and then visited the ancient city streets before and after dinner. This travelogue will introduce the ancient city of Weishan with its long history and culture.
1. The distance and road conditions from Haiji Village to Weishan Ancient City
The whole journey from Haiji Wetland Park to Weishan Ancient City is a 62 Km national highway, a mountain road with good road conditions.
2. Weishan Ancient City is the birthplace of Nanzhao Kingdom
Weishan Ancient City is located in Weishan, at the foothills of Ailao Mountain in western Yunnan and the source of the Red River. It is a city with rich local historical and cultural characteristics. It is a famous historical and cultural city in China and the birthplace of Nanzhao Kingdom.
The ancient city was built in the Yuan Dynasty and was converted into a brick city in the Ming Dynasty. It still retains its style today. There were cottages in the ancient city of Weishan in the early Tang Dynasty. During the Yuan Dynasty, the Duan family began to build earthen cities, and it was not until the Ming Dynasty that the city was officially built. To this day, the entire county still relatively intactly maintains the chessboard layout of the city when it was built more than 600 years ago. It is one of the best-preserved ancient architectural complexes of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China.
The streets in the ancient city are built in a standard tic-tac-toe structure with the arch tower as the center. There are 25 streets and 18 lanes in total, with a total length of 14 kilometers. The houses in the city basically maintain the Chinese structure, and the houses on both sides of the south and north main axes are intact. It preserves the architectural style and style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The house is oriented about 15 degrees from south to west, which combines the best local lighting methods to make up for the poor lighting of the "four-in-five patio".
The ancient city of Weishan has simple folk customs and profound cultural heritage. Coupled with the suitable climate and environment, the people of Weishan have a leisurely and calm life style.
Dali Weishan is a collection of cultural relics and historic sites, with many scenic spots, including Weibaoshan, Weishan Ancient City, Xuanlong Temple, Yuanjue Temple, Shanlongshan Yutucheng, Yunyin Temple, Chen Yishu Sarcophagus, Huiming Temple, Dongshan Menghua Lingquan, Bird Road Xiongguan , Wuyin Mountain and so on.
3. Fire case in Gongchen Tower in the ancient city
To be precise, the information that "Weishan Ancient City is the site of the Nanzhao Kingdom" originated from the "Gongchen Tower Fire Case in Weishan Ancient City" broadcast from the CCTV News Network program on January 4, 2015.
The details are: In the early morning of January 3, 2015, Gongchen Tower, an ancient city in Weishan, Yunnan with a history of more than 600 years, was reduced to ruins in a fire that burned for 2 hours, with only a few remaining A blackened wooden beam and broken walls. During the Spring Festival of 2016, we came to Weishan and saw the restored Gongchen Tower of the ancient city. The restored Gongchen Tower resembles an antique building, but has lost the charm of ancient architecture!
