Shouning was built during the Qiande period of the Northern Song Dynasty (963-968). The Zen Temple; the Prime Minister Shi Hao of the Southern Song Dynasty built a stone of more than 100 feet next to it, which looked like it was made from nature, and was called "False Rock"; during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), the monk Chaoji rebuilt the Buddhist temple and renamed it Shanglin Temple.
