Travel Notes on the Seto Inland Sea | Traveling through 2000 years, from the mountains and seas to the romance of the human world

After watching Land Art Season last year, I was moved by Mr. Kitagawa's romance. This year coincides with the triennial Seto Inland Sea Art Festival. For this reason, I did not take any vacation for nearly 5 months and got 8 days of vacation.

Regarding this trip, I thought I was going to see mountains, rivers, lakes and seas, and art. What I didn’t expect was to see the hidden greatness in my heart and the romance of life and death.

If you have to decide to live in seclusion in this life, then the Seto Inland Sea is one of the best choices. Even if you are just a fisherman who is not very good at fishing.

Small preparations before departure for travel

1) About visa

The Japanese visa is quite simple, it is a sticker visa . After I placed the order on Fliggy for free, it took about half a month to send the materials and get it.

2) About air tickets

It happened to be an event during the Spring and Autumn Period and I grabbed special tickets. The round-trip air ticket costs about 1,500 yuan. The nearest airports to the Seto Inland Sea are: Takamatsu Airport and Okayama Airport . I am entering from Osaka and returning from Takamatsu. So I went to Kyoto to play on the way.

3) About exchange rate

The current exchange rate is almost 100 yen to 6.6 yuan.

Based on experience, it is actually quite cheap to withdraw money directly from the ATM at 7-11. The handling fee is 110 yen each time.

4) About the socket

Japanese plugs have a flat head and two holes, so you don’t need an adapter to charge your phone.

5) About accommodation

This time I mainly choose to stay in B&Bs or hotels close to stations and attractions. Booking platforms: Airbnb / Booking / Agoda.

I lost the hotel BUS and had to take public transportation. The next bus left in an hour.

We happened to be a little hungry, so Teacher Yuan saw from the public that a good somen noodles restaurant was located near the port. We dragged our suitcases and found 【Ginshiro Handen Somen】.

I ordered an olive pasta. The taste is not much different from ordinary plain noodles. The addition of olives is more of a coloring effect. The olive flavor is very, very light.

The soul of some noodles is that the noodles are boiled in cold water and added with ice to increase elasticity. Unlike Chinese noodles, the sauce is poured directly into the noodles. Instead, add the noodles to the soy sauce for dipping before eating. Even though I don’t like noodles, I still ate half of it.

Shodoshima International Hotel

Having a window with a view of the sea is called a vacation

I, who must stay in a sea-view room at the beach, and Teacher Yuan, who saw that the room was 35 square meters, decided to stay at Xiaodou International Hotel for 2 nights.

The moment the automatic door of the hotel opened, I saw the sea and felt feeling like I was on vacation. However, it is too late to check in at the Japanese hotel, but luckily you can store your luggage.

We bought a one-day bus ticket (1,000 yen) at the port and took the bus directly from the hotel entrance to Azuki Olive Park.

The live-action version of my favorite anime, Kiki’s Delivery Service, was filmed on Shodoshima. Therefore, a must-have itinerary for Azuki Olive Park, take off with a broom like a witch!

Take bus No. 2 and get off at the stop before [Olive Park Entrance], which is directly to the museum. You can get a broom for free when you enter.

Walking to the Greek Windmill, everyone was trying to "take off".

In order to take a photo of the witch, we danced around for an hour. I think Teacher Yuan has more flying talent than me.

In the museum cafe, buy a limited-edition olive-flavored ice cream , which is a must-have. It doesn't taste weird as expected. It has a little more olive flavor than ordinary ice cream, but that's it.

Fortunately, I have a calm mind like Teacher Yuan, and I sat quietly in the rest area. I walked around and chatted with the uncles and aunts from Shanghai who were with the group.

Yokoo Museum of Art

Romance about life and death

The Yokoo Museum of Art is very close to Miyaura. From reading the guide earlier, I knew that this was a weird and impressive art museum.

Red and black constitute the main visual of the museum. The works of the bohemian (indescribable), weird and gorgeous Yokoo Tadanori are on display.

The building itself also does its best to express Yokoo's consistent painting style. Arrange life and death, red and black properly.

The most exquisite thing is that in Yokookan's tower , more than 10,000 postcards of waterfalls sent from all over the world are posted. The top and bottom of the tower are mirrors. Standing in it, there is a sense of eternity that transcends life and death.

Coming out of the art museum, I still had so much to say. I suddenly realized that I was completely immersed in a different kind of romance about life and death.

Toshima Museum of Art

see the flow of time

This is one of my favorite art galleries. It does not have a traditional art museum structure, nor does it have world-famous paintings. The only collection is the water droplets on the ground (Rei Naito's "Mother Form")

Hereit is forbidden to take pictures and it is forbidden to talk. We were free to sit on the concrete floor and even lying down was allowed. I couldn't help but lie down trying to catch the sound of wind and water, and accidentally fell asleep...

I think the value of art is not how much it can be sold for, but that when we met, I suddenly felt: I don’t belong to society or the world at this moment. I belong here.

Not far from the Teshima Museum of Art, there is a cafe. It is a mini art museum.

There is no "Mother Model" here, and the patio is covered with glass. But the structure remains. The advantage is that it allows you to take photos and record the mottled light and shadow.

There are so many celebrations in the Seto Inland Sea in September that all the restaurants you want to eat at are closed. Fortunately, the beautiful restaurant of the sea is open. Cycling over there, it’s just opened. There are not many people, so there are 5 of us. All Chinese.

The restaurant is a set menu and there is not much to choose from. I'll order an extra glass of orange juice and a brownie.

In terms of taste, it is at a stage where it is not delicious but not unpleasant. As for Internet celebrity restaurants, as long as the taste is up to standard, other scenery can completely make up for it.

From Shodoshima to Naoshima, I originally saw that there was a direct boat. When I made an appointment for the hotel shuttle to go to the port, the front desk informed me that it would only be open during the art festival. I had to go to Uno Port to transfer first.

Teacher Yuan and I are already veteran drivers with rich experience in boating. After storing our luggage, we walked around Uno for more than an hour.

Somewhat disappointed. I feel like it's a mess here.

When the ship arrived at Miyaura Port, the Japanese children on the same ship came ashore and saw the artistic decoration of the parking lot at the port, and immediately ran in and started playing. I like interactive art.

One dares to lead, the other dares to leave. Fully express the state of myself and Teacher Yuan. I couldn't find the road, so I accidentally looked at the uncle on the bicycle for 2 seconds. He immediately realized that I needed help and stopped~

It's a pity that he doesn't understand English and vaguely knows that we are going to the bus stop. Showed us the way. After saying thank you, we followed his trajectory inexplicably.

Later, when we encountered a fork in the road, we stopped. The uncle waved to us from a distance. We followed, and then we realized that he had been taking us to the station in person.

Chichu Art Museum

Capturing the light everywhere

Tadao Ando is the Japanese architect most familiar to Chinese people. Especially me, a former loser design monk and current bed and breakfast dog. I particularly admire him.

I don’t know when the industrial trend started to blow up in domestic B&Bs, and there was talk of frigidity. And Tadao Ando, ​​a self-taught professional boxer who became a monk on the way, smiled lightly, You are all younger brothers.

The Chichu Art Museum is like a maze to me.

There are basically no artificial light sources in the museum. Implementing Tadao Ando’s philosophy: Architectural design is to capture the ubiquitous light.

Of course, photography is not allowed here, but there are a lot of noises and a lot of queues. Almost every exhibition hall requires waiting for more than ten minutes.

The first thing to enter is the work of American installation artist Walter De Maria, titled Time, Eternity, No Time (time, timeless, notime).

Hei Qiuqiu's expression is quite cute, but other than that, I didn't get much.

Then queue up to see the works of James Turrell. He is one of the most influential contemporary spatial artists. Make good use of light and space as materials for creation.

The collection in the ground mainly uses projection, enclosed space, and LED light tubes.

I find it very magical, a bizarre and realistic display. But in fact, the perception time is very short. The staff in the museum will urge you to leave, and many people will queue up behind you to see it.

My favorite is Monet. The water lilies in the mottled light and shadow make me feel particularly comfortable. Absolutely amazing.

Monet, the master of impressionism, always painted the world before his eyes. In his later years, Monet suffered from cataracts, making his paintings increasingly blurry. The "Water Lilies" in the museum's collection is Monet's later work.

I think it is most appropriate to look for the water lilies in Monet's eyes with a weak light source in the underground world.

Different forms of light, either bright or dark, appear in the Chichu Art Museum. I am impressed by Tadao Ando’s genius design and the curator’s wonderful choice. Everyone is working with light and shadow artists.

Even the water lily pond, which is exactly the same as Monet's work, makes people happy.

It is an art museum worth visiting.

Benesse Art Museum

An art hotel where you want to stay but can’t afford it

Two months before departure, I saw Benesse Hotel and really wanted to stay there. After all, Tadao Ando designed it, and the art collection sleeps with you and wakes up in the island sunshine. Definitely an experience worth having in a lifetime.

Finally, poverty calmed me down.

Fortunately, although I can’t afford to live in Benesse, I can afford tickets to art museums that are open to the public.

This is a very typical art museum. The works are also quite interesting. Three of my personal favorites:

【100 Live and Die】Watching different life and death dance before our eyes, Life and death are just verbs without adjectives.

【the secret of the sky】You have to lie down and stare at the sky in a daze to be considered here. Oh, by the way, Peng Yuyan also came to lie down. He posted on INS.

[Time exposed] Just looking at the painting, there is nothing special. What is interesting is that the scene in the painting appeared in the exhibition hall, and then left and stood outside the exhibition hall to see the real version of the painting on the beach in the distance. There is a secret that transcends time and space. Is it only time that is exposed?

Lee Ufan Museum of Art

The art of points, lines and surfaces

Of the three art museums, I find this one the most boring. If you don't have time, you don't have to go in to see it.

Tadao Ando's architectural designs are still beautiful. Compared with the collection inside the museum, the dotted line art installation outside the museum is the finishing touch. Perfectly interprets the core of Lee Ufan's art, with a Taoist and natural flavor.

I visited several art museums in a row over the past few days. For comparison, I went to the art museum to see Lee Ufan’s works. Different people have different opinions. It’s worth visiting outdoors.

My favorite is the big lawn outside the art museum. It happened to be noon and the museum was about to close. There are few people and the sun is just right.

I said the work under the lawn is a big earphone . Teacher Yuan took a dislocation picture for me.

I skipped to the headset and walked across the steel road with a clicking sound. Consume my last bit of blood today.

The lawn goes downhill through the grass, and you can see the real-life works of Time exposed.

Dating Yayoi Kusama

The whole world loves polka dots and pumpkins

Teacher Yuan is a loyal fan of Yayoi Kusama. Naoshima Pumpkin Check-in is a must. We stayed at an artist's BNB in ​​Naoshima the night before, and we were finally able to sleep until we woke up naturally.

btw, at night, Teacher Yuan did the math. I found that a bicycle costs 2,000 yen a day and a BUS costs 100 yen. One bicycle fee can take 20 bus trips. So, took the Polka Dot Bus today to find pumpkins!

For Yellow Pumpkin, you can take the Naoshima bus directly to the terminal [つつじso], and it’s only a few minutes’ walk away.

This 1994 work by Yayoi Kusama is still the most popular spot on Naoshima.

If you want to take a picture of the sky, you have to get up early, or wait .

Red Pumpkin is located near the port of this village. People come and go here. If you want to take a picture of the sky, you really need to spend more time and look for more angles.

However, I personally think that red pumpkins are more suitable for fun, while yellow pumpkins are more suitable for taking pictures.

When I was posing for a photo, there happened to be a little boy in red playing in the pumpkin. I accidentally took a fun photo together.

I think it’s the best coffee in Naoshima

An absolute surprise. I’m not a big fan of coffee, but this is the best coffee I’ve had in recent times.

The boss, Mr. Kawamoto, can speak a few words of Chinese, and his level of Japanese is on par with mine. He is very gentle, and the power girl is also super cute.

The curry chicken rice at the door is also delicious. I don’t like curry, so I couldn’t eat it. Teacher Yuan loves curry and praises its deliciousness.

"Midorikawa Yoichi" Museum in Seto

Touching photographic records

Simply put this is a very beautiful library. The feeling of the library becomes even stronger after entering.

Exhibited in autumn is an exhibition of photographer Yoichi Midorikawa's continuous photography of the changes in Setouchi.

If you look at the architecture alone, the exhibition hall is not unique and impressive, but I was moved by the work of photographer Midorikawa Yoichi. Each picture is a living photographic record.

Realistic photography, paired with an old, rustic, rather than refined, museum, complements each other.

First day on Naoshima. I went to all the places I wanted to visit and was basically satisfied after seeing Pumpkin today. However, the home plan basically closes at 4:30. We didn’t get up early, and it was already afternoon when we arrived at the home plan area, so we just watched as we happened.

Home Project is a series of art space works. The theme is renovating Naoshima’s unique houses, temples and shrines, and transforming the space into a work.

I happened to see Dental Clinic Residential Renovation first while taking the bus.

There is a dark black space on the first floor, with three vampire beds (I’m just kidding, don’t believe it!) installed on the wall. The second floor is bright and you can see the goddess holding a cone. Teacher Yuan said it would be good to have a bed here.

Especially love the outdoor wall decoration. Because it is a dental office renovation, there are still small teeth and porcelain tiles that make your smile look toothy.

Goo Shrine

Hell, heaven, earth

We searched for it for a long, long time. I followed the map and climbed to the middle of the mountain. I was too tired to see anything. What I encountered was another shrine.

After going down the mountain, I didn't give up and continued to look for it. It took a lot of effort to climb to the correct hillside of Goou Shrine.

If the shrine on the ground only had an extra glass step, that would be too ordinary. This is not the usual style of Hiroshi Sugimoto, a philosophical photographer.

I saw staff guiding me on the path next to the shrine. After we gave Autumn a pass, he gave us a flashlight and asked us to go to a cave next to it.

After passing through the long and narrow dark passage, the flashlight suddenly illuminated the glass steps above the water pool, and my vision was immediately attracted.

The climax was not here, so we turned around and left, turning off the flashlights. The light from outside the cave shines into your eyes, like a miracle.

Emotions are advanced layer by layer. World, hell, heaven, just overnight.

Naoshima Pallion

Naoshima Town is composed of 27 islands, and [Naoshima Island] is made up of a white steel structure and the 28th floating island .

Dusk is the most beautiful time for this floating island . In the glow of the seaside, we squatted on the curb and watched the light passing through the floating island change minute by second. Finally, it turned into a luminous crystal at night.

Because you can enter the interior, both tourists and local children use this as a playground.

Ogijima

unexpected beauty

There is a direct boat from Naoshima to Ogijima, departing from Miyaura Port. It is only open on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. We made it just in time and arrived at Ogijima in just 20 minutes.

Halfway through the trip, we are not too fast, and we proceed at the pace of a small island a day. Originally I had no plans to go to Ogijima, but I thought, since I’m here now, I’ll just drop by and have a look.

Ogijima has a quick look at the exhibitions, but there are still some, and I am willing to spend more time to see them slowly. For example, [Universe Flower·Dance·Huan]. After entering, seemed like was locked into a kaleidoscope .

The art of light, shadow and sound

Because I didn’t do any strategy for Ogijima, I just walked around according to the navigation. When I saw OG08, I entered the waiting queue.

This work has requirements for visiting time and number of people. Wait a few minutes in the court before entering. At that moment, I understood why everyone who came out was reluctant to leave.

I vaguely heard the crisp tapping sound of bamboo slices and saw the shadows on the wall beating in an orderly manner. Only then did I realize that there is a lot of mystery here.

Each piece of bamboo product is more like a mechanism, linked together. Under the light, the shadows cast by the moving bamboo art are constantly changing.

For the first time since seeing the exhibition, my eyes felt anxious. Rush to capture the most information. Can't bear to leave it for a moment.

After watching アキノリウム, I feel that Ogijima is worth it. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Megijima

The human touch of small shops and small islands

The main purpose of going to Megijima was to renovate the new store this year, and it turned out to be true! I fell in love with this place right away.

Photo studios, barber shops, table tennis centers, fortune-telling shops, dry cleaners, and takoyaki shops... all are interactive art installations. Compared with art that is tall and can be viewed from a distance, I prefer touchable art. The Art of Touch.

Originally, the island food recommended on the official website was that small shops sell shaved ice, but I didn’t expect that shaved ice is only sold in the summer. Nowin the autumn, it will be octopus balls.

This is the last day to see the Seto Inland Sea Art Festival. After saying goodbye to Teacher Yuan, I decided to go to Takami Island to find out.

Takami Island is the most tiring island in all my itineraries. The entire climb up the mountains and stairs, especially the Pyrethrum House, cost me half my life.

Takami Island used to be prosperous due to the cultivation of pyrethrum, but now the industry has changed, pyrethrum can no longer bring good economic benefits, and the island is becoming increasingly deserted.

This should be the most beautiful restaurant on Takami Island. Here, I met Momo, a Shanghai girl from the Shrimp Team. She said that as soon as Beichuan came to this restaurant, she would stay there and not want to leave.
