Overview

Grand Teton National Park, established in 1929, is located in northwest Wyoming, only 16 kilometers away from Yellowstone. Both belong to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. People can even visit both parks at the same time by buying one ticket, making it a tourist attraction in Yellowstone. It is a place where you can buy one get one free, so it is jokingly called the back garden of Huangshi.

Grand Teton is not just Yellowstone’s back garden

But it's not just Yellowstone's back garden. The 1,300-square-kilometer park condenses the scenery of the entire Rocky Mountains. There are 200 miles of snow-capped mountain peaks, the winding Snake River, vast grasslands, and a rich variety of wildlife.

Here we want to focus on its snow-capped mountains: Grand Teton has 8 peaks with an altitude of over 3,600 meters, of which the highest peak, Grand Teton Peak, is 4,198 meters above sea level. You must know that the highest peak in the United States is only 4,417 meters, and the majesty of the Grand Teton is evident.

Grand Teton is not just Yellowstone’s back garden

Many travel notes mention that the Grand Teton is the mountain surrounded by stars in the logo of the Paramount movie. This is probably a rumor. According to W. W. Hodkinson, one of the founders of Hollywood and president of Paramount Pictures, the mountain is a mountain near his hometown in his memory - Ben Lomond, where he spent his childhood. So when he wanted to design a logo for the company, he casually drew the mountain in his memory on a napkin and gave it to his assistant. Later, the company designed Paramount's logo based on it. In the past 100 years, their company's logo has been improved more than 10 times, and now it is difficult to tell which mountain it looks like.

Grand Teton is not just Yellowstone’s back garden

It is said that the name Grand Teton was obtained by French hunters. The French also named two nearby peaks. The names of the three peaks are South Teton, Middle Teton and Grand Teton. The three peaks together are called "Les Trois Tetons" .

What does that mean? It literally translates to three breasts. The French are so straightforward and interesting.

The Chinese could not accept such a vulgar name, so they transliterated it and called it the "Three Tetons". The three peaks also became the South Tetons, the Middle Tetons, and the Grand Tetons. With the Grand Tetons and Grand Teton Park.

The literal translation of Grand Teton Park is Big Breasts Park.

So, are you no longer able to appreciate the Grand Tetons with the same eyes?

Attractions

There are two main roads in Grand Teton Park: the east route and the west route, which run parallel for the most part, only to diverge near Moose and then meet again near the Jackson Lake Dam.

The western route is within Grand Teton, while the eastern route is Interstate 191. I personally suspect that the purpose of the Eastern Route is to get everyone to Yellowstone faster without having to go through the Grand Tetons.

Grand Teton is not just Yellowstone’s back garden

The attractions in Grand Teton Park are very simple: they are scattered on the two main traffic routes on the east and west lines, with various photos that can be takenOne mountain, one river and two lakes's observation deck or photo spot.

One mountain refers to the Grand Tetons, one river refers to the Snake River, and two lakes refer to the two largest lakes in the park-Jackson Lake and Jenny Lake.

1
Grand Tetons/Archbishops

Grand Teton is located on the west side of the park, with an altitude of 4198 meters. It is the sacred mountain of the Indians. The mountains are covered with snow all year round, and the scenery is extraordinary.

The Cathedral Group is a collective name for the eight highest peaks in the Grand Teton Mountains. These peaks are all above 3,600 meters above sea level, and together they are impressive. This is also the most classic symbol of Grand Teton Park.

More than half of the glaciers in the Grand Tetons are concentrated on the Archbishop Peaks.

2
snake river

The Snake River, also known as the Snake River, is located between the east line and the west line. It twists and turns like an advancing snake, hence its name. Almost all of the most beautiful photo spots are near the Snake River: some are historical sites, such as the Mormon Trail River Transfiguration Church, etc., and many more are observation decks.

The latter is very easy to understand. Anyone who has studied photography knows that places with mountains and water have better scenery and better-looking photos.

Grand Teton is not just Yellowstone’s back garden

The Snake River in Grand Teton Park is only a small section of the entire Snake River: the Snake River is actually the largest tributary of the Columbia River, originating from the Continental Divide in Yellowstone Park and flowing southward, passing through Lake Jackson and throughout Grand Teton Park. After leaving Grand Teton Park, it continues to flow south through the town of Jackson, and then continues south and west into Iowa, all the way to Algon, Washington and other states, with a total length of 1,670 kilometers and a drainage area of 280,000 square meters. kilometer.

3
lake jackson

Lake Jackson is a natural lake formed during the Ice Age. The lake's water mainly comes from the Snake River and streams formed by melting snow in the Grand Teton Mountains. After the Lake Jackson Dam was built, Lake Jackson continued to grow due to water storage, and there were 15 small islands in the lake.

The east bank of the lake is located on Huangshi's transportation thoroughfare and has become a famous check-in attraction, while the west bank of the lake maintains its original style and has many hiking attractions.

There are also docks and hotels on the lakeside where you can cruise.

4
jenny lake

Lake Jenny is the second largest lake in Grand Teton Park and is said to be named after the discoverer's wife.

The snow-capped mountains here are surrounded by flower meadows, and their reflections on the lake are stunningly beautiful. As a result, it has become a popular destination for walkers and cyclists.

One thing you must do here is follow the Jenny Lake Loop around the lake to enjoy the beautiful scenery. It can be completed in 3-5 hours.

On the west bank of the lake, you can continue along the trail to visit Hidden Falls, or go to Inspiration Observation Point(Inspiration Point of Grand Teton)Overlooking Lake Jenny.

If you still have the energy, you can follow the Cascade Trail to Cascade Canyon (also known as Waterfall Canyon ). Cascade Creek flows through this area, creating many waterfalls, including Hidden Falls.

If you don’t want to walk that far, you can take a boat directly from the East Pier to the West Pier, and then walk to Diepu Canyon.

Taking photos and hiking are two of the great pleasures of Grand Teton Park. In addition to the attractions mentioned above, there are a large number of hiking routes in Grand Teton. The specific list can be found at:

How to get to Grand Teton?

1. Airport

There are two airports closest to Yellowstone, namely Jackson (JAC) in Wyoming and Idaho Falls (IDA) in Iowa. Since Grand Teton is close to Yellowstone, you can consider traveling together. There are 5 small airports near Huangshi, which can be taken into consideration when planning.

However, both the above-mentioned two airports and the entry standards near Huangshi are very small. Even in the United States, there may not be direct flights. Tourists need to fly to nearby major airports such as Salt Lake City and Denver before transferring.

Some people fly to Salt Lake City Airport (SLC) or Denver Airport (DEN) first and then drive to Grand Teton. Salt Lake City is much closer to Yellowstone than Denver, so it has become the first choice for most people.

For Yellowstone transportation/airport, please see the Yellowstone Guide. Click on the topic #US National Parks at the top of the article to view it.

2. Public transportation

Accommodation information

Since there are not many tourists in Grand Teton, many of them are photographers on day trips, so accommodation here is relatively less stressful. In addition, the nearby town of Jackson is just 10 minutes away from the entrance of the park, so there is actually no essential difference between living in the park and living outside the park.

If you prefer purer natural scenery and want to stay away from the hustle and bustle, it is recommended to live in a park. If you want to have a convenient life in addition to natural scenery and go to restaurants to taste delicious food, it is recommended to live in Jackson.

1. Accommodation outside the park

The two closest lodgings outside the park are Jackson and Teton Village.

Both are ski resorts, but because Jackson is located on a major transportation route, it also serves as an accommodation base for Yellowstone and Grand Teton in addition to the ski town. There are more choices for both accommodation and food. So between the two, I recommend Jackson more.
