The Cowshed Art Village is the first historic art village in Hong Kong. The Art Village was formerly the Ma Tau Kok Cattle and Animal Quarantine Station and Slaughterhouse. It was later renovated and split into multiple units rented out to local art creators as studios, and gradually evolved into the Cowshed Art Village. The Cowshed Art Village covers an area of 1.7 hectares. The Ma Tau Kok Cowhouse built of red bricks has the characteristics of a Western market in the early 20th century. It is the only historical building complex of this kind in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's Cowshed Art Village is a unique place, similar to Beijing's 798 Art Factory, but completely different from 798. This building, built at the beginning of the last century, is the only remaining ancient cattle shed in Hong Kong and is home to a large number of intellectuals and artists. The characteristic red brick flat houses of the Cowshed Art Village have the layout of a Western market in the early 20th century, and the most distinctive feature is that they are built with red bricks. Opposite the entrance of the cowshed is the atrium, an open space of about 40 square meters, surrounded by red brick low walls. The original wall was used for tying cattle. There are five red brick bungalows surrounding the atrium, each fifty meters long, arranged in an orderly manner. Throughout the cowshed, long cement troughs can be seen everywhere, which were used as food troughs for feeding cattle. The iron chains and rings at the bottom of the troughs are still there today. The details of the red brick house are also distinctive, such as the tiled roof, the doors and windows decorated with flowered iron bars, the wooden ceiling beams inside the house, and the brick chimney that is almost extinct in the market. The exterior of each bungalow is supported by cast iron columns, which are now all painted black, creating a strong contrast with the red bricks and full of artistic flavor.
