Colonia del Sacramento is the oldest city in Uruguay. The old town of the city still preserves many buildings that are a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese and post-colonial styles. In 1995, UNESCO listed it as one of the World Cultural Heritage Sites.

Colonia (Colonia del Sacramento) is a port city in southwestern Uruguay and the capital of Colonia Province. It is 177 kilometers east of Montevideo. The small city is located on a peninsula protruding on the north bank of the La Plata River, across the river from the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.
Colonia was built in 1680 as the first settlement of colonists in Uruguay. It was once a strategic town fought over by the Portuguese and the Spanish. After nearly 100 years of fighting between the two sides, it was finally occupied by the Spanish.
Colonia has a developed tourism industry. There is the summer resort of Real de San Carlos nearby. Its old town has preserved many buildings from the Spanish and Portuguese colonial era and has been designated as a "Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. Outside Colonia, there are many flat sandy beaches along the Rio de la Plata River, which are tourist destinations for people to relax and vacation. Parque Anchorena is a famous forest park, where the Ukrainian president's summer residence is located and the annual agricultural and animal husbandry expo is also held here.
In January 2011, the New York Times ranked Colonia 31st among the 41 best travel destinations not to be missed.
