Cai Yuanpei's former residence is somewhat different from other former residences. The former residences of others, such as Guo Moruo, Lu Xun, Mei Lanfang, and Lao She, all had their own houses and owned the property rights during their lifetimes. But Cai Yuanpei never bought any property in his life. Until his death in Hong Kong in 1940, he did not own any property of his own in mainland China. Among the several residences that Cai Yuanpei rented in Beijing, No. 75 Dongtangzi Hutong, Dongcheng District, was designated as the "former residence of Cai Yuanpei" because Cai Yuanpei rented here from 1917 to 1923 when he was the president of Peking University. The "May 4th Movement" was planned here.
