Machu Picchu (Spanish: Machu Picchu, Quechua: Machu Piqchu, which means "ancient mountain") is a famous pre-Columbian Inca Empire ruins in Peru. It is known as the "Lost City" of the Inca Empire and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu is 120 kilometers away from the then capital of Cusco. It is located on a steep and narrow ridge between the most difficult to pass peaks of the Andes, the Old Man Peak and the Young Man Peak, at an altitude of 2,400 meters. It is believed that Machu Picchu was founded by the Inca ruler Pachacuti around 1440 and was inhabited until the Spanish conquest of Peru in 1532. The best time to travel to Machu Picchu is from May to September each year to avoid the rainy season and avoid walking on bad roads.

How to get there:
The Incas called the coastal route Camino de los llanos (the Flat Road) and the mountain route Cápac Ñam. Today, thousands of tourists travel the Inca Road every year, especially Cápac Ñam, a two-day hike from Cusco through the Andes to the ruins of Machu Picchu.
