Hu Xueyan was a famous entrepreneur and politician in the late Qing Dynasty. He grew up in a poor family. Later, through hard work, he became a prosperous businessman with great wealth. He was known as the "Business Saint of a Generation". Hu Xueyan's former residence was built at the peak of his career. It is a mansion that combines traditional Chinese architectural features with Western architectural styles. The building has a compact layout and exquisite conception. Everything from the selection of building materials to the furnishings is precious. It is comparable to the emperor's Forbidden City and can be called the largest mansion of China's wealthy merchants in the late Qing Dynasty. After Hu Xueyan's death, the former residence changed owners several times. Due to years of disrepair, the buildings were severely damaged. In 1999, the Hangzhou Municipal Government renovated the former residence. After two years, it was officially opened to the public in 2001.

Hu Xueyan's former residence is long from north to south and wide from east to west, adopting the symmetrical layout of traditional Chinese residences. The central axis of the former residence is the living room, which is composed of the sedan hall, the Baishi Tower, and the four-sided hall; the right side is the living room courtyard, which is composed of the Rongdong Courtyard, the Yixia Courtyard, the Yuanyang Hall, the Qingya Hall, the Harmony Hall, and the Nanmu Hall. It is the residence of wives, concubines and children; on the left is the Zhiyuan Garden, which is connected by curved ponds and connected corridors. Pavilions, terraces and pavilions are scattered at random. It is beautiful and elegant, and it is beautiful everywhere. Not only that, the former residence also displays calligraphy and stone carvings by many famous artists, adding a touch of antique charm to the residence.
