Wonsan (Korean: 원산 English: Wonsan) is the capital of Gangwon Province, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It is located in the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula and is an important trading port in North Korea. There are naval and air bases of the Korean People's Army in Wonsan. The port was opened in 1880 by the Japanese army who invaded Korea and was originally named Wonsanjin. After 1914, due to the opening of many railway lines, it gradually developed into an important trading port on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. Wonsan is a must-stop place for traveling from Pyongyang to Mount Kumgang. It is 200 kilometers away from Pyongyang and 110 kilometers away from Mount Kumgang. How to get there:
