Nanjing Normal University is a key university in Jiangsu Province. Its main origin can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902. It has since gone through Liangjiang Excellent Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, Southeast University, Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, Jiangsu University, Central University, Nanjing University, etc.; its other source is Huiwen College founded in 1888, which later developed into the private Jinling University. In 1951, it merged with the private Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences to form the public Jinling University. In 1952, during the reorganization of colleges and universities across the country, Nanjing Normal University was established on the basis of the former Nanjing University, Jinling University and other related departments. The school was located at the former site of Jinling Women's University. In 1984, it was renamed Nanjing Normal University. In 1996, it entered the ranks of key universities under the national “211 Project”. In 2000, Nanjing Power College was merged. In 2011, it became a pilot unit of Jiangsu Provincial Graduate School. Currently, the school is striving to build a “domestic first-class teaching and research university with strong comprehensiveness, distinctive school-running characteristics” and lay a solid foundation for building a “domestic high-level university with certain international influence” in the future.
