Beijing Institute of Technology is a national key university that focuses on science and engineering, with coordinated development of engineering, science, and liberal arts. It is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China. It is one of the first batch of graduate schools established in the "211 Project" and "985 Project" key universities. The school was formerly the Yan'an Academy of Natural Sciences founded in Yan'an in 1940. It is the first science and engineering university founded by the Communist Party of China. Later, it moved to North China and changed its name to the College of Engineering of North China University. After the founding of New China, it moved to Beijing and merged with the famous Sino-French University. It was the first new and formalized heavy industry university in the history of New China and was renamed Beijing Institute of Technology. In 1988, it was named Beijing Institute of Technology.

The main campus of Beijing Institute of Technology consists of Zhongguancun Campus and Liangxiang Campus.
