Introduction to the statue of Emperor Wenchang: The prototype of Emperor Wenchang, Zhang Yazi, was originally a deity formed by the merger of two Shu people, Zhang Yu and Yazi. In the second year of Ningkang in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (374), Zhang Yu, a native of Shu, claimed to be the king of Shu. He rebelled against Fu Jian of the former Qin Dynasty and died heroically in battle. The Shu people built Zhang Yu Temple in Qiqu Mountain, Zitong County, and worshiped him as the Dragon God of Lei Ze. At that time, there was also the Zitong God Yazi Temple in Zitong Qiqu Mountain. Later generations named the two gods together as Zhang Yazi, and Zhang Yazi became the God of Zitong.
Later, with the strong praise of Taoism and literati, nine emperors of the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties were successively granted titles. The divine talent of Zitong coincided with the star Wenchang in charge of cultural fortune. Emperor Zitong became Emperor Wenchang, and Zhang Yazi was transformed from a minor local god. He suddenly became a Wenchang star worshiped by the whole world, specializing in fame, fortune, and wealth.
