Introduction to the Astana Ancient Tombs: The Astana Ancient Tombs are a national key cultural relics protection unit. They are located about 40 kilometers east-southeast of Turpan City and 6 kilometers away from the ancient city of Gaochang. The public cemeteries of urban and rural officials and civilians in Gaochang were formed approximately from the 3rd to 8th centuries AD and have a history of more than 1,700 years. Asta has received widespread attention in the archaeological and historical circles at home and abroad, and is known as the "underground museum". There are more than 500 ancient tombs in the entire tomb complex, where nobles, officials and common people from the early Western Jin Dynasty to the mid-Tang Dynasty are buried. However, the tomb of King Gaochang has not yet been discovered. Zhang Xiong and his wife, the famous generals of the Gaochang Kingdom of the Ju family, and their son Zhang Huaiji are buried here. Most of the tombs in the Astana Tombs were dug from the loess layer mixed with Gobi stones. Due to the high open terrain and hot and dry climate here, a natural sterile environment is formed in the tomb. The ancient corpses and funerary objects in the tomb have not decayed for thousands of years, thus preserving a large number of cultural relics. Many paintings, clay figurines and thousands of other unearthed cultural relics are as bright as new and well preserved. The shape of dumplings unearthed from the Tang Dynasty is the same as today, and the fillings inside are also intact.
