Pingyao South Street was founded in the sixth year of Xianfeng (1856) and closed in the second year of the Republic of China (1913), lasting 58 years. South Street, also known as Ming and Qing Street, is the central axis of the symmetrical layout of Pingyao Ancient City. It starts from the junction of East and West Streets in the north and ends at Dadongmen in the south. It is run through the north and south by ancient market buildings. It was the most prosperous commercial area in Pingyao Ancient City during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The center is also one of the essence of the historical and cultural heritage of Pingyao Ancient City. The shops on both sides of the street are buildings with Ming and Qing styles. In June 2009, South Street in Pingyao Ancient City, a world cultural heritage, was selected into the first batch of "China's Famous Historical and Cultural Streets".
