Pingyao Ancient City Wall is one of the four most intact ancient city walls in China. In 1988, it was announced as one of the third batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council of the People's Republic of China. In 1997, the ancient city of Pingyao, including the Pingyao City Wall, was included in the World Heritage List. Pingyao is known as "Ancient Pottery" in history. In the Spring and Autumn Period, the Central Capital was established here. In the Han Dynasty, Jingling County was established and Jingling City was built. In the Northern Wei Dynasty, it was named Pingyao and a city was built. When it was rebuilt in the third year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1370), the outer walls were laid with bricks. Pingyao City Wall has many horse faces, beautiful shape, and complete defensive facilities. It is the only city wall in China's history. It is famous for its ancient city building techniques and excellent work materials. It is a precious material for studying the ancient Chinese city building system.
