Introduction to water burial: Water burial is another reason why the Ganges is famous. Indians believe that immersion in the Ganges can wash away a person's sins; there are also people who scatter the ashes of cremated people into the river directly. Dead bodies, relics and funeral items are thrown directly into the river and left to drift, believing that this will help the deceased get a better afterlife and even obtain "moksha" (moksha) earlier. Therefore, the environment of the Ganges River can be described as extremely dirty. As a result, the Ganges was rated as one of the five most polluted rivers in the world in 2007.
