The most distinctive feature of the City God's Temple in Pingyao is that "there is a temple within a temple", which constitutes a unique scene of "respecting gods and art houses and one temple, jointly receiving incense". With the main hall of the City God as the center, it consists of Liucao Mansion, Tutu Hall, Zao It consists of four parts: Jun Temple and Caishen Temple (with Zhenwu Tower attached). The buildings are large in scale and the temple buildings are well preserved. They are considered treasures among county-level City God temples in China. The Chenghuang Temple is located on the north side of the North Street of the Chenghuang Temple in the east of Pingyao County, Shanxi Province. It was built in the Ming Dynasty and later suffered a fire. What you see now is the temple that was rebuilt during the Xianfeng period.
The City God's Temple was burned down by fire and was rebuilt in the 33rd to 34th year of Jiajing's reign in the Ming Dynasty (1554-1555). In the ninth year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1859), another fire broke out in the City God's Temple, covering a large area of ​​the temple complex. It was burned down; from the third to the eighth year of Tongzhi (1864-1869), after six years of reconstruction, most of the buildings were restored. However, in the 90 years after the Republic of China, the Temple of the City God suffered repeated man-made damage. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the building was completely restored to its original state, and its former style was restored.
