Introduction to the Monument of Memnius: The Monument of Memnius is opposite the Temple of Domitian, separated by the Avenue of Crites. Mannus was a well-known architect in Ephesus and the grandson of the Roman emperor Sulla (86 BC). The Ephesians assisted the neighboring kingdom of Pontus in resisting the Roman invasion. After Pontus defeated Rome, he ordered the massacre of 80,000 Romans in that area. To commemorate this tragic event, Mannus built this monument between 50 and 30 BC to protect the Roman people in the city.
