Pyongyang Metro Station Introduction: Pyongyang’s urban rail transit system was built in 1966. It was initiated in Pyongyang after North Korean leader Kim Il Sung visited the underground railway system under construction in Beijing. With the support of the People's Republic of China, the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries, Pyongyang has built the world's deepest subway system, modeled on Beijing and Moscow. The depth is generally between 22-100 meters, and some mountainous sections are as deep as 150 meters. In addition to transportation, , this subway system also has the function of an air-raid shelter, and is specially designed with consideration for possible wars. There are 16 stations in the subway. The pillars, corridors, steps, and even the entire platform are all made of fine marble. Bronze sculptures, murals, and mosaics fill the subway station, and countless golden chandeliers hang from the dome. The level of luxurious decoration not only far exceeds that of the Seoul subway, but can also compete with the Moscow subway, which is famous for its "underground palace" and has a Russian style.
