Relief introduction: On the gable of the porch supported by 8 large stone pillars, there is a group of solemn marble reliefs. The relief tells the story of the time when Jefferson and five other people were appointed by the Continental Congress to draft the Declaration of Independence on the eve of American independence. The young Jefferson stands in the center, with Benjamin Franklin and John Adams on his left; and on Jefferson's right are two other collaborators, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston. The author of this group of stone statues is New York sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, who was commissioned by the Jefferson Memorial Construction Committee to complete the work before the memorial was completed.
