Chapter 32 of Jingxiang’s Travels | "Journey to Jiangxi" (1) Shangrao Concentration Camp
I started my journey to Jiangxi as soon as I walked out of Nanchang Railway Station.
It was the hottest season in the south at this time, and the fierce sun made me regret not wearing a hat. When it was urgent, Ma Xingtian quickly took out a towel from his suitcase and wrapped it around his head, thus avoiding the scorching sun from shining directly on his head.
After spending one night in Nanchang City, we went straight to Shangrao the next day. Teacher Jian from Shangrao told me that the taxi fare from the train station to their school is 20 yuan.
When I walked out of Shangrao Railway Station, the taxi driver came forward to offer business: "Sir, do you want a taxi?"
I handed over the address of Teacher Jian’s school and emphasized that I was new here: “I am a foreigner and not familiar with this place. How much does this place cost?”
"20 yuan."
"Okay." I was relieved. The reason why I emphasize the unfamiliarity of the place is to test whether the driver is honest and reliable. If the price he says exceeds 20 yuan, I will not hesitate to find someone else.
In this way, the first impression Jiangxi people gave me was that they were honest.
After meeting Teacher Jian, we immediately went to visit Shangrao Concentration Camp.
This is the place where the Kuomintang detained captured New Fourth Army soldiers after the Wannan Incident. This national key cultural relics protection unit located at No. 66, Lingyuan Road, Xinzhou District, Shangrao City, covers an area of 2 square kilometers. What is this concept? The old Yangjiang City surrounding Hanoi is only 1 square kilometer, and the Shangrao Concentration Camp is as big as two old Yangjiang cities.
However, this does not mean that No. 66 Lingyuan Road has 2 square kilometers, but it is composed of Qifengyan, Zhoutian Village, Maojialing, Licun and other concentration camps, because they are all in Shangrao It is nearby, so it is collectively called "Shangrao Concentration Camp". The total area of these concentration camps added up is 2 square kilometers.
Of course, I have not seen these attractions one by one. No. 66 Lingyuan Road is just the former site of Maojialing Concentration Camp:
The big house on the left is one of the prisons where New Fourth Army soldiers were held, and the interrogation room on the right. Judging from the national strength at that time, they could only requisition private houses and renovate them, which seemed very crude.
There were various instruments of torture in the interrogation room, including tiger benches, finger clamps, etc. Because it was dark inside at the time and the shooting effect was poor, they were not put up.
What's the big house on the left? Hard to say. Call it a prison, but those New Fourth Army soldiers were not tried by the courts; call it a detention center, but the treatment they gave to New Fourth Army soldiers was worse than prisoners. Let’s look at the cages in which they are kept:
Is this locking up people like animals?
wrong! More cruel than confining animals! The picture below shows a cage holding a single person:
The cage can only allow one person to stand upright, and it is impossible to squat down. This alone is torture enough. But what’s even more inhumane is yet to come: The cage is surrounded by sharp iron spikes. If you are tired of standing and want to lean back, your back will only be pressed against the iron spikes. , let the iron thorns pierce the flesh on your back. Similarly, there are thorns going forward, left, and right. If you want to squat down, your butt will be stabbed by the iron thorn behind you first. This is a glimpse of the cruelty of humans towards their own kind.
The same goes for the double standing cage, except that the two people facing each other can lean on each other.
However, this detention point does not seem to be large, and the number of people detained is obviously very limited. Just look at the top officer at this point:
The "enemy guard platoon leader's room" indicates that the highest commander here is a platoon leader, and the number of guard troops is only thirty or forty. However, according to the size of the prison, it may only be able to hold dozens of people, which shows that the enemy is nervous when facing a powerful enemy.
As I said just now, this concentration camp is very simple and has no facilities such as iron doors at all. This side door can be easily opened.
According to the description on the door, during the Maojialing riots, the revolutionary patriots broke open the door and rushed out of the prison after seizing the enemy's weapons.
A platoon of national guard troops would also be stripped of their weapons by unarmed and imprisoned New Fourth Army soldiers and rush out of the concentration camp.
After walking out of Shangrao Concentration, I couldn't calm down for a long time. People can still bear the inhuman torture. I have to say that all the New Fourth Army are hard-core.
