Encountering Tibet (Part 8)—Tibet’s Holy Lake

 

Manasarovar : is known as the "Mother of Rivers in the World" , is the freshwater lake with the most transparent water in China, ranks first among the three holy lakes. Located 35 kilometers east of Pulan County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet and 20 kilometers southeast of Mount Kailash, it is a place called the "Western Jade Pool" by the eminent monk Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty in "The Records of the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty".

Namtso : "Namtso" is Tibetan, and the Mongolian name is "Tenggri Sea". Both names mean "Sky Lake", one of the three holy lakes . It is located in the central part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, on the southeastern boundary of Nagqu Prefecture and the northwest boundary of Lhasa City. Standing by Namtso Lake, you feel like you are in a blue world.

Yamdrok Yumco : Yamdrok Yumco Lake is referred to as Yang Lake, which means "Jasper Lake" in Tibetan and is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet . It is located in Langkazi County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet, more than 70 kilometers southwest of Lhasa City. Together with Namtso and Manasarovar, it is also known as the three holy lakes in Tibet. It is the largest inland lake at the northern foot of the Himalayas . The beauty of the lakes and mountains ranks first in southern Tibet. .

Pangong Tso : Pangong Tso Lake is an inland lake on the plateau. The most peculiar thing about this lake is that it is a lake with different salt content in the water from east to west. The lake water shows different colors such as dark green, light green and dark blue due to factors such as light, depth and brightness. It is located about 12 kilometers northwest of Ritu County, Ngari Prefecture. The scenery around the lake is very beautiful, surrounded by mountains and dotted with snow-capped mountains in the distance.

 

Basongcuo: Basongco is also known as Cuogao Lake, which means "green water" in Tibetan. It is a famous sacred lake and holy place. Exactly as its name suggests, Basongcuo is green, the kind of light jade-like green without impurities. It is located in a high gorge and deep valley in the upper reaches of the Ba River, more than 50 kilometers away from Gongbujiangda County, Nyingchi Prefecture. Basongcuo Lake Scenic Area integrates snow-capped mountains, lakes, forests, waterfalls and pastures, cultural relics and historical sites, and ancient temples. The scenery changes in four seasons, and all kinds of wild and rare plants gather together. It is truly a paradise on earth, and is known as "Little Switzerland".

 

Dang Qiong Cuo : Dang Qiong Cuo is like a piece of emerald falling from the sky, quietly embedded in the mountains. It is located in the south of Nyima County, Nagqu Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, and in the north of Dangra Yumcuo. On the east bank of the lake are continuous Chu-red mountain walls that stand like screens. Stairs washed by the lake water circle around from the top of the lakeside.

 

La Ang Cuo : La Ang Cuo is also called Ghost Lake, which in Tibetan means "poisonous black lake" , so the water in the lake cannot be drunk by humans and animals. , which is probably the origin of the name "Ghost Lake". Located in Pulan County, Ngari Prefecture, separated from Manasarovar Road. In fact, Holy Lake and Ghost Lake were originally one lake. Due to climate change, the lake retreated and the water level dropped, so they were separated by a narrow hill.

 

Cona Lake : Cona Lake is the highest freshwater lake in the world, is a pearl on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway . Located in Amdo County, Nagqu Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, the source lake of the Nu River is 4,800 meters above sea level and covers an area of ​​about 300 square kilometers. Rivers and streams in the southern part of the Tanggula Mountains all merge into Cona Lake and flow into the Nu River. In the minds of local Tibetans, Cuona Lake is a "sacred lake".

 

Danglha Yumcuo:Danglha Yongcuo is also called Dangreyongcuo, Tanggula Youmucuo and Tanggula Lake. is the largest holy lake in Tibet and the third largest lake in Tibet. It is located in Nyima County, Nagqu Prefecture, Tibet, in the fault basin at the northern foot of the middle section of the Gangdese Mountains. Dangra Yumcuo is a large lake that runs north-south and is shaped like the sole of a shoe. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, except for a gap on the east side of Dalguo Mountain on the south bank. From July to September every year, the climate is mild, the wind is beautiful, and everything is luxuriant. It is the golden season for tourism.
