Introduction to the Crown Room: The Crown Room displays Scotland’s national treasures—the crown, the king’s sword, and the scepter. These three treasures are collectively called the Honors of Scotland.
In 1540, a goldsmith who lived in the Royal Mile made the crown. The gold body was inlaid with pearls, crystals and various gemstones, and was later decorated with velvet and ermine.
The sterling silver and gilded scepter was a gift from Pope Alexander VI to James IV in 1494. The King's Sword was a gift from Pope Julius II to King James IV of Scotland in 1507. The sword's blade is engraved with the symbols of Saints Peter, Saint Paul and Julius II. The first time the scepter and sword were used together was at the coronation of Queen Mary, who was only nine months old at the time.
In 1996, another heavyweight exhibit was added to the treasure display cabinet - the Stone of Destiny.
