Introduction to the Black Death Column: The Black Death (Plague) Column (Pestsaule) is located in the center of Graben Street (Graben). It is the largest Baroque "Black Death Column" in Europe. The Black Death was raging in Vienna in 1679, and the plague killed almost two-thirds of the Viennese people. Later, in order to commemorate the victims who died from the plague, Austrian Emperor Leopold I ordered the construction of this Black Death Memorial Column.
