Introduction to the Chain Bridge: Chain Bridge The Chain Bridge is the first permanent building that truly connects the two cities of Pest and Buda. It has been a symbol of Budapest for many years.
Construction of the Chain Bridge was first started in 1839 and completed in 1849. During World War II, the Germans blew up all the bridges in order to consolidate their fortress on Castle Hill. Today's Chain Bridge was rebuilt after the war. One hundred years later, in 1949, it was reopened.
