Introduction to the Sacred Way: The Sacred Way (Via Sacra) is the oldest road in Rome. It is paved with flat black basalt and winds from the Arc de Triomphe of Emperor Titus through the ancient Roman market to the Capitoline Hill. Heroes of the Roman Republic paraded here when they returned in triumph, but it gradually declined and became a gathering place for pickpockets and vagrants.
