Introduction to the Spanish Steps: The Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinita' dei Monti) are located on the north side of the square. They are composed of three steps, all paved with white marble. The top leads to the Holy Trinity Church. There are 138 steps in total. The longest and widest staircase in Europe.
This staircase was built with the assistance of the French Ambassador in 1725. It is decorated with the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the Bourbon dynasty, and the eagle and crown of Pope Gregory XIII, because it is in the Plaza de España, near the Spanish Embassy. , hence the name Spanish Steps. Now, people jokingly call it "Italian designed, French funded, British visited, and now American occupied."
