Introduction to the Plaza de Armas: The Plaza de Armas is the center of Cusco. It was once a place for celebrations during the Inca Empire. In the center of the square stands a full-length statue of Peruvian national hero Pac Amaru II. The square is surrounded by Spanish arcades and four Catholic churches. Several narrow stone-paved streets radiate to the surroundings, and there are still many pointed thatched houses built with earth rings on both sides of the streets. Many of the stone house foundations are relics of the Inca Empire.
