Introduction to St. George's Cathedral: St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town is known as the "People's Church". Even during apartheid in South Africa, the doors of St. George's Cathedral were always open to people of all races. On September 7, 1986, Archbishop Tutu of the Anglican Church of South Africa became the first black archbishop of South Africa here. On September 13, 1989, Tutu led 30,000 South Africans from here in the famous anti-racist rule march. The marchers chanted: "We are the rainbow nation, we are the new people of South Africa." The term "Rainbow Nation" coined by Tutu has since become synonymous with the integration of people of all ethnic groups in South Africa.
