Introduction to Lake Garda: Italy's Lake Garda (Lago di Gard in Italian), also known as Lake Benaco, is the third largest lake in the Alps. It was formed by the melting of glaciers at the end of the last ice age. A tourist attraction developed after World War II. At the beginning of the 9th century, Charlemagne gained the right to rule the lake area. The lake was renamed after the lakeside city of Garda, which means "watchtower, defensive post".
