Introduction to Estense Castle: The Castle of the Estense family (Castello Estense di Ferrara) is surrounded by a moat and consists of towers, moats, suspension bridges and towering defensive earthen walls as buttresses. The palace where the family ruled Ferrara for three hundred years. The castle was built in 1385 in the era of Nicolo II d’Este, a fiefdom emperor who built the castle in order to rule his subjects and control the surrounding land politically and militarily.
