Introduction to Revolution Square: Havana Revolution Square was originally called People's Square. It was built in 1959 and was renamed because of the victory of the Cuban Revolution. The square is surrounded by many important institutions in Cuba. In the center is the 17-meter-high marble statue of Jose Marti (Menmorial Jose Marti), Cuba's most famous revolutionary leader and poet. Behind the statue is a 142-meter-high watchtower. , which is the tallest building in Havana. On the south side of the square is the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (Comite Central de Partido Comunista de Cuba), which is the highest authority in Cuba; on the north side of the square are the Cuban Ministry of Interior (Ministerio del Interior) and the Cuban Ministry of Communications. There is a huge statue of Che Guevara on the outer wall of the Ministry of Interior, as well as Che Guevara's famous saying "Hasta La Victoria Siempre" (Always Toward Victory). The portrait on the wall of the Ministry of Communications is of another revolutionary commander, Camilo, who together with Castro led the victory of the Cuban Revolution. The buildings surrounding Revolution Square also include the Cuban Ministry of Defense, the National Theater of Cuba, and the National Library.
