In the Zhou Dynasty, the cultural celebrity Laozi Li Er was the teacher of Confucius. He was followed by Li Chong, the eldest son of Situ Li Tan of the Qin State, who was the governor of Longxi County. Li Chong's second son Li Yao was the governor of Nan County and was granted the title of Didaohou; his grandson Li Xin was the general and was granted the title of Longxi Marquis. His descendant, "Flying General" Li Guang, was an important figure in the Han Dynasty. During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the Li family in Longxi arose in troubled times, and Li Hao, the king of Xiliang, was the first head of the Li family. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Li family in Longxi had been a high-ranking official for generations. Together with Zhaojun Li, Qinghe Bolingcui, Fan Yanglu, Xingyang Zheng, and Taiyuan King, they were the five most powerful noble families in the Central Plains. Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty issued a decree banning these five surnames and seven families. The family gets married on its own. When the Li family of Longxi arrived in the Tang Dynasty, they successively produced 10 prime ministers. Li Yuan, a branch of the Li family in Longxi, destroyed the Sui Dynasty and established the Tang Dynasty, ushering in a great era of cultural prosperity. By the time Zheng Qiao compiled "The Origin of the Li Family" in the Southern Song Dynasty, "those who spoke of Li were called Longxi".
