Introduction to the former site of Moses Synagogue: The former site of Moses Synagogue is one of the only two remaining synagogue sites in Shanghai. It was built by Russian Jews in 1928. During World War II, it was a place where Jewish refugees in Shanghai often gathered and held religious ceremonies. In 2004 It is listed as the fourth batch of outstanding historical buildings in Shanghai. During his visit in 1994, former Israeli Prime Minister Rabin left a message thanking the "Shanghai people for their extraordinary humanitarian feats during World War II." In March 2007, the Hongkou District People's Government invested in a comprehensive renovation based on the original architectural drawings discovered in the archives. The old Moses Synagogue site has been restored to the architectural style it had when it was a synagogue in 1928, and the internal structure has been adjusted according to the drawings. A replica of this architectural drawing is now placed on the first floor. The second floor is equipped with a visitor signature machine, a Jewish refugee database and video programs. The third floor is for art exhibits, including oil paintings, sculptures, furnishings, etc.
