The park was formerly known as Liyuan, also known as Yiyuan. It was the villa of Li Yaoting, a wealthy businessman who was the first president of the Chongqing Chamber of Commerce in the late Qing Dynasty. During the Xuantong period of the late Qing Dynasty (1909-1911 AD), Li Yaoting and his son, a salt merchant in En'an, Yunnan, admired the beauty of Eling and built a garden here, naming it "Liyuan", also known as "Yiyuan". During the Anti-Japanese War, Chiang Kai-shek and his wife lived in the "Flying Pavilion" in the garden for half a year; British Ambassador Carl also lived in the "Flying Pavilion" for five years; the Australian Embassy was once located in the garden. After Chongqing was liberated in 1949, it became the headquarters of the Southwest Military Region. Comrades Deng Xiaoping, Liu Bocheng, He Long and Li Da lived here successively. In 1958, the Chongqing Municipal Government expanded and renovated the old site of Liyuan Garden, built new pavilions and pavilions, planted trees and flowers, and named it "Eling Park".
