Toling Monastery is the first Buddhist temple built by the Guge Kingdom (10th to 17th century AD) in the Ngari region. Located on the banks of the Xiangquan River in the northwest of Zada County, Ngari, Tibet, it was first built in the Northern Song Dynasty by King Yeshe Wo of the Guge Kingdom and the Buddhist scripture translation master Rinchen Sangbu, modeled after the Samye Monastery in the front Tibet. Toling means flying in the sky and never falling. Due to the great efforts of the Guge Dynasty to promote Buddhism, Toling Monastery gradually became the center of Buddhism at that time. There are three treasures in the Toling Monastery: one is an elk horn. Some say it was brought by Atisha from India, while others say it was an elk horn from the place where the Buddha preached. The second is an ivory five-Buddha crown (symbolizing the crown of the five wise Tathagatas), which is said to have been worn by the first abbot of Toling Monastery and passed down to later generations. Every abbot of the monastery wears this crown in Buddhist activities. The third is a large black turned stone with a clear footprint imprint on it, which goes about an inch deep into the stone with very clear palm lines. It is said that this is the footprint left by Atisha.
