Introduction to the Earth Goddess: The Cibeles Fountain in the square depicts Cibeles, the Phrygian fertility goddess, sitting on a chariot pulled by two lions. The fountain was built during the reign of Carlos III and designed by Ventura Rodriguez between 1777 and 1782. The goddess and the chariot are the work of Francisco Gutiérrez, and the lion is the work of Robert Michel. This fountain was originally adjacent to the Buena Vista Palace and was moved to the center of the square in the late 19th century.
