Introduction to the Navigation Monument: The Navigation Monument (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) stands in the square by the sea. It is a sail-shaped monument built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Navigating Prince Henry. The monument is engraved with Henry and 80 others. The statue of the sailor, with Henry standing on the bow of the ship, followed by his assistant Gama, is flanked by some navigators who set out with him, as well as famous generals, missionaries and scientists in Portuguese history. It is quite impressive to commemorate Portugal's 300th anniversary. It has a glorious history of opening up the ocean for many years.
Visitors can climb to the top of the monument and overlook the nearby scenery and harbor, which are extremely beautiful and moving. On the ground in front of the monument is a world map with the date of the discovery of the New World engraved on it.
