Provins began to prosper in 1000 AD, when the count organized the "Market Passage" and paid to escort the merchants to the market. The city's commercial culture was fully developed and reached its peak during the reign of Duke Thibaud IV of Champagne. Local literature, economy, art and fashion were all flourishing. After the 14th century, European trade routes were diverted to the Alps, and people began to make more and more use of the Strait of Gibraltar. The prosperous trade in Provins gradually came to an end.Provins once witnessed the early development of international trade organizations and the wool industry.
