Introduction to the Battle of East Bay: In early February 1939, in order to break the Japanese blockade and "mopping up" of the Maoshan Anti-Japanese Base Area in southern Jiangsu, the Second Regiment of the First Detachment of the New Fourth Army divided the second battalion and the third battalion into two groups. Attack the stronghold in Dongwan south of Tianwang Temple in Jurong, and use most of the third battalion to set up an ambush on both sides of the road near Wujiabian in the northeast of Dongwan to block the reinforcements from Tianwang Temple. In this "encirclement and reinforcements" battle, 23 New Fourth Army soldiers unfortunately died and were buried on the spot by several local people due to the emergency of the war.
