Church introduction: Kapnikarea Church was rebuilt from an ancient Greek temple. It is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Athens and was built around the 11th century. The origin of the church's name has not been determined, but it is generally believed that it comes from the word "Kapnikon" (a Byzantine tax).
