Introduction to the Swiss Gate: The Swiss Gate (Schweizertor) is located on the right side of Franz Square. In the Middle Ages, many royal palaces liked to let tough and honest Swiss guard the city gates, and the Habsburg Dynasty did not Exception, hence the name of this oldest city gate.
From 1547 to 1552, Emperor Ferdinand I transformed the ancient castle into a Renaissance palace. The Swiss Gate was also built during this period. There is a moat outside the city gate, and a suspension bridge connects the inside and outside of the city. The courtyard inside the Swiss Gate is also called the Swiss Court.
