Zanghai Temple was built in the Song Dynasty and was originally named Juehai Temple. In the Ming Dynasty, because the nunnery was located to the east of Fushui Rock, it was called Fushuidong nunnery. In the long and changeable historical years that followed, the nunnery experienced many ups and downs. In the early Qing Dynasty, after the eminent monk Tongxiu, who was revered as the "National Master of Dajue Puji Nengren" by Emperor Shunzhi who believed in Buddhism and became a monk for a time, presided over, "Fushui Dong'an" was renamed "Zanghai Zen Temple".
