Introduction to Zhaozhong Temple: On August 23, 1884, the French invaders attacked the Majiang River in Fuzhou Port, and the entire Fujian Navy was wiped out. In order to commemorate the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country in the battle, in January 1885, the Minister of Shipping Pei Yinsen ordered The Zhaozhong Temple was built at the southern foot of Maxian Mountain and completed in 1886. The Zhaozhong Temple has two entrances, seven pillars and three bays, with five couplets passing through a bucket-style hard top. The hall enshrines the tombs of 736 fallen heroes.
In 1920, the alumni of the Navy and Shipbuilding School of the Republic of China raised funds for reconstruction, and the Fujianese martyrs who died in the Sino-Japanese naval battle of Sino-Japanese War of 1898 were put in the memorial hall. The west side of the temple was laid as a martyrs cemetery.
