Introduction to the new Royal Library: The new Royal Library was built in 1999 as an extension of the Royal Library. It is located in the harbor. The whole building is sparkling and the black mirror reflects the sea and sky. The locals call it the "Black Diamond Library". A large dividing line divides the building into two parts, flooding the atrium with light. The atrium connects the city to the sea outside, and also connects the old and new buildings of the library. Iron frame beams weighing 1 ton/m hold up the glass walls. A 200-square-meter masterpiece by renowned painter Per Kirkeby adorns the ceiling of the Black Diamond Library. Here you can take a look at the manuscripts of the famous Danish master Søren Kierkegaard, which are collected in the Søren Kierkegaard Archives Room of the Royal Library. In addition to the usual main functions of a library, the building also houses the National Photography Gallery, a bookshop, a coffee bar, a restaurant, a roof terrace and the 600-seat Queen's Music and Drama Hall.
