Introduction to the Bodhi Tree: During the Liang Dynasty of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Zen Master Zhiyao, a famous Indian monk, came to Guangzhou via Tibet to give lectures. He brought a Bodhi tree and planted it on the altar of the temple. In the first year of Yifeng of the Tang Dynasty (676), the eminent monk Huineng received ordination under the Bodhi tree in the temple and founded the Southern Sect of Buddhism, known as the "Sixth Patriarch of Zen", which added immortal glory to the temple.
