Two or three thousand years ago, the Yue people living on the southeast coast began extraordinary maritime activities. Over the long years, the port gradually formed. During the Southern Dynasties, large ships were connected to the South China Sea countries. By the Tang Dynasty, Quanzhou had become one of the major ports in southern China. Its status surpassed that of Guangzhou and became It is the "largest port in the East" where "merchant ships from all over the world and tributes from all over the world gather here". During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Quanzhou's external traffic gradually declined, but private maritime trade activities were still very active.
