Main Street Introduction: Main Street is the most important street in the Old Town of Heidelberg. The area starting from Bismarckplatz in the west and Karlsplatz in the east is a pedestrian area. This 1.6-kilometer-long pedestrian street gathers the main shopping and dining venues in the old city and is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe. The main street is paved with oval stone slabs and is narrow and winding. It was formed in the Middle Ages, but most of the buildings on both sides were destroyed by the French invasion of the Grand Alliance War in the late 17th century. Most of the houses built later were in the Baroque style.
