Cemetery introduction: The Cemetery (Campo Santo) is a rectangular building located next to the cathedral on the north side of the square. It was first built in 1277 and took more than two hundred years to complete. It is the cemetery of important figures in the city of Pisa.
The outer walls of the cemetery are white marble walls, and in the middle is a courtyard surrounded by a cloister. There are more than 600 tombstones and sarcophagi with reliefs in the garden, and the cloisters are decorated with exquisite murals.
During World War II, the cemetery was hit by artillery fire and was severely damaged. The murals in the garden were particularly damaged. It was later carefully restored to what it is today.
